Wars defeat league leaders

We were facing top of the league this week and knew it would be a tough game. We had already played Overton at home and won 4-1 but it would be different at their ground. The pitch was very bumpy and definitely didn’t suit our lean passing game.

We had a strong team again and were very up for the game. The first 20 minutes were very even with neither side creating any great chances. We started to play the ball around a little more and grew in confidence, Dave Baker hit an absolute scorcher from just outside the box which stung the keepers hands as he made a good save. Overton launched an attack and there was a huge scuffle right on our goal line, Keith and Cruncher were both on top of the ball and somehow the referee managed to award a free kick to Overton. Overton took it very quickly and slotted the ball into the back of our net but quite rightly the ref disallowed it as he hadn’t blown his whistle. We were battling very hard throughout the first half and defensively we were absolutely brilliant but honours were even as we went in at half time 0-0.

We came out second half believing that Overton would tire as the game progressed. However they continued to be strong and battled really well. The two teams were both pretty even but we were starting to get more of the ball and create better chances. The longer the game went on the more it looked like it would be a 0-0 draw both teams having played well.

In the 82nd minute Overton broke through and put a telling cross over our defence, which their striker slammed in the back of our net. Luckily the eagle eyed linesman had spotted both the Overton forwards were offside and it was disallowed. We were still driving on and wanted all 3 points from this game, we mounted another attack and PIP directed a beautiful lob into the top right hand corner of Overtons net. 1-0 and we were absolutely overjoyed. We now needed to hang on to make sure we won the game. We won the ball straight back from their kick off and passed through to James who out muscled the central defender who was about 2 foot taller than him to slam the ball past their keeper. 2 goals in the 86th and 87th minute had been killer blows to Overton who had played really well, Ollie had a late strike just past their left hand post and that was the last kick of the match.

A really good game of football and a display that showed a bit more from this side. The mighty Wars are not only great footballers but also great battlers when they need to be. The defence of Jack, Crunch, Gaz and Lee were outstanding but I honestly thought every player had a great game today.
