After a mixed pre-season and a delay to the start of our campaign we finally got our first fixture.. An away tie to Division 1 side Penn.. a real test for the Town, now back into the Hellenic for the first time in over 30 years.
With a few key personnel missing Town set up defensively to nullify the hosts which we did superbly for the first 20 minutes reducing Penn to limited chances and not allowing them to settle on the ball.
Penn broke the deadlock when a deep cross was headed back across goal which allowed the oncoming striker to tap home from a few yards out. 1-0
10 minutes later Penn made it two when they pinched the ball on the halfway line, broke at pace and played the striker in who slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
2-0.
Half time 2-0.
Town made some changes with Martin Williams replacing himself due to his back jarring and Jon little having rolled his ankle. On came Ash Dixon and Nick Little, also prompting a change in shape.
Town looked better with the wind at their backs and grew into the half, keeping the ball better but rarely troubling the Penn goal.
This was Penn's 4th competitive game but only our first, and Penn started to show their extra sharpness and fitness as the half wore on, as they went 3-0 up and not long after it was 4-0, when a ball squirmed under the unfortunate Jack Young in goal, who had made some great saves prior.
Full Time 4-0.
This was a free hit for the lads against a tough well organised, sharp and lively Penn side.
We gave a good account of ourselves and it was a great test for the lads before the league campaign starts next weekend.
Thanks to Penn for hosting and wish them well for the season.
Next up for Town we welcome Westfield reserves at home in our opening league game of the campaign..3pm Kick Off..
