Watton 14 Swaffham 15. 14/01/23
Local derbies are always closely fought affairs and this Saturdays was no different as both sides battled the elements at a rain lashed Pages Lane
Swaffham scored first and probably edged a first half punctuated by numerous penalties although Watton should have levelled on the stroke of half time when they knocked on as the line beckoned.
The Red and Black Army started the second half the stronger when forward pressure released the backs and Tommy Llyod crashed over to give the hosts a 7 – 5 lead.
A yellow card gave the Pedlars a numerical advantage, but great defence limited the visitors to a successfully converted penalty to go 8-7 ahead.
Both sides pressed in difficult conditions, but the defences held firm until Swaffam drove over from short range and they looked in control at 15 - 7.
The young Watton squad however showed great belief as they turned up the pressure and the forwards committed the Swaffham defence allowing the half backs the space to allow Richie Brand to dance around the last defenders for an excellent try which he then converted, and the hosts were one point behind at 14 – 15.
The visitors managed the last few minutes to secure the victory and Watton whilst disappointed can be satisfied with a determined performance in a game that could have gone either way showing they are more than worthy of their position in the top two of this division.
Last word goes to Carol and her merry band of helpers who laid on a wonderful pre-match lunch for the vice presidents and guests.
