In other news, Waverley win...

With an unprecedented number of players unavailable for the game with Abinger Hammer (30 players having declared themselves unavailable in the run-up to the game), drastic measures were needed to ensure Waverley could field a team. The most drastic of these measures was bringing Neil Carmichael (“Hoagy”) out of cryogenic suspension, meaning the visitors arrived with ten players. Hoagy was joined by Jamie Harris (“DJ Teabag”), Johnny Mathis (“the Crooner”), Adrian Day (“Mog”), Simon Brewer (“KV”), Peter Brewer (“Mr B”), Bob Moxham (“Sponge Bob”), Adam Carmichael (“AC”), Jason Trimmer (“JT”) and Laura Brewer (“Loz”).

Waverley batted first and got off to a positive start with the opening pairing of Teabag and the Crooner, the Crooner in particular taking a shine to the early bowling as he raced to 27. An edge to first slip saw him return to the hutch and he was followed soon after by Teabag. Mog and KV kept the scoreboard ticking over with skipper KV soon pushing down the accelerator with several lusty blows. The skipper passed his half century but was unable to repeat his record innings of 157* not out, returning to the pavilion with a score of 58. Mr B assisted Mog in accumulating the runs and bar a couple of narrow escapes for Mr B, the remaining overs passed largely without incident. The only unfortunate note was Mog’s inability to get the strike as 1600 hours approached, Waverley’s enforced declaration leaving Mog stranded for a jug-evading 49* not out. Mr B’s 24* not out meant that Abinger needed 206 to win.

Grey skies and thunder had been rolling around throughout the Waverley innings but it wasn’t until tea that the rain arrived, resulting in a leisurely tea as the players waited for the shower to blow over. Teabag and AC opened the bowling and for the second time this season, Teabag got a wicket with the first ball of the innings with an edge through to the Crooner. He picked up his second wicket a couple of overs later when he trapped the other opener LBW. When AC also got his name in the book with an LBW the home side were reeling, their situation made more desperate when AC grabbed a second wicket thanks to well-taken catch from Loz. Bowling changes from KV introduced Mr B and Sponge Bob, both bowlers keeping the pressure on with two wickets apiece (Mr B knocking back leg stump twice, Sponge Bob benefiting from a sharp stumping and a delivery that somehow landed on top of the bails). More bowling changes kept the home side on their toes, with Loz bowling a tidy four over spell and Hoagy adding his name to the list of wicket-takers thanks to another stumping from the Crooner. The twenty overs were well underway by this point and with only eight of them to go, Waverley needed one more wicket. Teabag was reintroduced to do the business and promptly delivered, his effort ball knocking the middle stump out of the ground and wrapping up victory for the visitors.

The awards saw Hoagy receive the Man of the Match Hat, mainly for making it through a whole game without picking up an injury. The *Anchor Hat was awarded to Mog for his anchoring of the Waverley innings, with the Supporters’ Egyptian Hieroglyph Pink T-shirt award going to Teabag for his feeble signalling whilst umpiring. The Pink T-shirt went to JT, who made the fatal mistake of saying “ouch” whilst fielding the ball in a game otherwise devoid of Pink T-shirt offences.

With AC having moved to Southampton and Teabag only being available for one of two more games this season, we now turn to what may be the last of Comments from the Clio. Having talked about AC’s new “crib”, discussion soon turned to the recent success of the Olympic Games. This in turn caused Teabag to pose a question that no doubt has been at the forefront of everyone’s minds: who is Waverley’s poster boy? Have your say by voting in the new poll on the home page...
