Waverley Win Despite Wobble
Visitors secure victory with strong bowling fight back.
With the captain away in Devon, it was left to Jim Jam to lead the troops on the trip to the local village of Elstead. After a quick discussion with the opposition skipper it was decided that Waverley would bat first.
On a good looking track for batting first, Jim and new boy Elliot Thorogood
opened up. Jim returned quickly to the pavilion for a duck (the only one of the Waverley innings), and unfortunately Sam Vass
and Si came and went quickly as well (for 1 and 4 respectively) to leave Waverley struggling on 31 for 3. This then became 44 -4 when Elliot was bowled for a well made 26. Beanie and Mog put a recovery together though both fell in quick succession for 17 and 12 to leave Waverley at 80-6, making Jim Jam’s confidence in batting first look slightly optimistic. This brought Waverley youngsters Woz and Knoxy junior to the crease, and the pair put on a good partnership of 59, before Woz fell for 12. Despite this setback Knoxy carried on and with help from Loz, Litwin and PB gave Waverley’s final score an air of respectability at 170 all out, Ewok ending up with a career high of 41.
After tea, the first ball of the innings was hit to Woz at cover though unfortunately the catch was put down. This was looking like an expensive drop as after 5 overs Elstead were at 43 without loss, making Waverley’s 170 look very precarious. Though here’s when Mog came to fore and picked up 2 wickets in the 6th over, bring some respite to the scoring rate. Litwin was then replaced by Mr B who promptly got a wicket in his first over, which was then followed by another 2 wickets for Mog and a further one for Mr B bring Elstead to 63-6. With Mog finished with 4-36, and Mr B taken off, it was left to Knoxy junior and Elliot to hopefully finish off the innings. Knoxy promptly picked up a wicket in his first over followed by a second in his next over. Elliot then finished up the innings with 2 wickets. Elstead were bowled out for 133, with Waverley winning by 37 runs.
The Man of the Match hat went to Will for a good display with bat and ball, anchor hat to Woz for dropping a catch of the first ball of the innings, pink t shirt was awarded to Matt Dugay for commenting ‘yay’ on a Facebook status of his girlfriend, but was worn by Jim Jam due to the captain being unavailable.
