A sunny day in Ruislip, and Wealdstone u9 Whites were playing Spartans u9 Reds at home. The pitch was in good condition and with the teams having already had 2 close games this season (a win each) we knew it was going to be a close match. Wealdstone started well with early chances, but Spartans had a strong and direct forward who was causing problems. Fortunately we had Aidan at the back who matched him stride for stride and prevented him getting through a number of times. The one time he did get through he managed to get a shot on target, but Harrison dived well to his left to save it. 0-0 at the end of the first quarter, a very even match. Second quarter and Wealdstone started to create a few more chances, shots from Charlie and Patrick grazing the bar and Harrison not quite able to sort his feet out quickly enough from close range. 0-0 at half time. Third quarter and now Thomas and Charlie were in defence, solidly tackling and preventing any chances, plus an important defensive role played by Adam and Patrick in centre midfield to stop Spartans star player getting on the ball and creating chances. From a corner Wealdstone worked a lovely passing routine between Oliver, Charlie and Adam, keeping the ball well they squared it to George who ran on to it and struck it low into the bottom corner. 1-0. With Spartans heads down, Wealdstone sensed their opportunity, Oscar broke down the right, went past his defender and pulled the ball back for George to side foot in from 3 yards, 2-0. Spartans have won most of their games this season, so they were not about to give up. Almost immediately the ball was in Wealdstone's goal area, it bounced around a bit and their striker slid it into the net, 2-1. The last quarter was tense for the parents watching. Aidan and Harrison both had good long range shots go just wide and strong tackling from Thomas and Charlie protected Adam in our goal well. A couple of half-chances for Spartans, but Adam was off his line quickly and rushed the attacker to shoot wide. A loud cheer greeted the final whistle, signalling a well deserved victory for Wealdstone u9 Whites. A real team performance with everyone working very hard and contributing well. Man of the Match went to George for his solid defending and 2 goals.
