Woke to a misty start to the day, but luckily by the time the parents had set up the goal nets and the respect line the sun had broken through. This was always going to be a strong match as Brentham moved up a division with us last season, although it sounded like they had a new manager this year.
Match started and both teams were strongly on the attack with play moving swiftly up and down the pitch, shots on goal from both sides but first blood came to Wealdstone with Harry scoring from a corner. This seemed to give the boys a lift and after Jamie took a goal kick that went three quarters of the way up the field, Harry kicked it home to make it 2-0. Unfortunately shortly after there was an altercation between Harry and a Brentham player and Harry was given a yellow card, not sure if this made our boys a little glum or gave Brentham the impertas they needed to score 2 goals in quick succession. Play continued hard and fast, Dom stepped up to take a free kick off a hand ball just over the half way line and 'bent it like Beckham' to play a beautiful curving ball into the back of the net. Unfortunately, partly in this writer's humble opinion due to our defence being to far up the pitch, Brentham pulled to two goals back to make it 3-4 at half time. Phew!
The second half kicked off with Brentham pushing hard and our attackers trying to push through, after several players ending up on the floor, Ollie got tackled hard and went down but play continued with no one kicking the ball off and the ref not blowing his whistle. Sam tried to kick the ball off and a Brentham player went down, where upon the ref suddenly remembered his whistle, blew it and gave Sam a yellow card! This writer is still less than impressed. Play resumed with with missed chances and more floor work when Sam took a hard tackle to the ankle and had to be helped off the pitch, looking at the picture posted after the match it is severely bruised and swollen. Wealdstone pushed hard and were given a corner that Rokas kicked home. Brentham hadn't quite finished yet and got one past Jamie and with time ticking down everyone's nerves where on edge, luckily Wealdstone had some reserves left and passed the ball down the field to Ollie to hammer home.
Final score 5-5 (with several more grey hairs and heart palpitations!)
