The Weir Recreation Club was originally the work sports club of the nearby Weir Engineering Group and Weirs' home ground of Albert Park has always been owned by the company. But the company wished to divest themselves of the property and have agreed to transfer the property into the name of the sports club. This is great news for the club as it really leaves the club's future in its own hands.
However Weir Engineering made the property transfer conditional on the sports club no longer using the name Weirs. So it means that from now on Weir Recreation Club will be Langside Sports Club and Weirs Cricket Club will be Langside Cricket Club.
While its sad to see the traditional name go the long-term future looks bright for the newly-named Langside Cricket Club with all doubt removed over the future of the ground.
Meanwhile, the short and medium term futures have looked a bit troubling for everybody recently. As a result of the pandemic we are now in the middle of July and there has still been no cricket played. There is a plan to start cricket on 1st August. None of the normal WDCU competitions will be played but hopefully some reasonably competitive cricket can be played in the last (and first) month of the season.
Further updates on fixtures will be available on this website once these are known.
