McGowan hat-trick in vein as OGs succumb to defeat in thriller!

OGs left wondering what could have been after leaving themselves too much to do in second half.

Wellingborough Old Grammarians: (19) 43
Tries: McGowan 3, Smith 1, King 1, Lenton 1, Beveridge 1

Northampton Casuals: (33) 47

Wellingborough Old Grammarians fell agonising close to a comeback victory against Northampton Casuals,

Having started brightly, OGs raced into a five - nil lead inside the opening six minutes with Hooker Jimmy McGowan grabbing his first try, of what would turn out to be a stunning hat-trick.

In a back-and-forth opening 20 minutes, both teams looked to play into space and attack from all over. In tough conditions, credit should be given to both sides for the low number of handling errors, making for a thrilling opening quarter.

However, after repeated errors in defence, coupled with some outstanding attacking play from Casuals, the OGs found themselves 33 - 19 down heading into the interval.

A fast start to the second half saw OGs score two unanswered tries to storm back into contention - cutting the deficit to only two points.

The opening score of the half came off the back of some slick interplay between forwards and backs, which saw OGs march into the opposition's 22 straight from the restart. A clever finish from McGowan saw him hold onto an outstanding offload from Brian King to dive over for his second try of the match.

OGs quickly followed up with another try, with Smith scoring after a flowing attacking move.

In what turned out to be the theme of the second half, just as OGs were within touching distance, the Casuals would halt the OGs momentum by retaliating with a try of their own.

Down by seven with 15 minutes remaining, OGs continued to show attacking enterprise. A hat-trick try for McGowan, coupled with scores from Beveridge and Lenton again drew OGs within reach of Casuals.

With only 3 minutes remaining, OGs continued to attack from all areas of the pitch. Unfortunately, their attacking enterprise couldn't be sustained and Casuals struck the killer blow after capitalising on an OGs mistake to run under the posts and seal victory.
