Wellingborough Old Grammarians ran in seven tries to claim victory over Northampton Outlaws in a competitive pre-season friendly.

Kicking off at the unusual time of 12 noon, it didn't take long for an experienced OGs side to open up the scoring. Following early scrum dominance, scrumhalf Pat Kitson sniped over from short range for the first of a two-try afternoon. Dan Tilley converted the first of 6 successful attempts for a 7-0 lead.

The Outlaws quickly sprang back to life to camp themselves in the OGs 22. Their sustained spell of pressure eventually proved fruitful as their dancing winger slipped through tackles to cross the line. The attempted conversion was missed.

In what proved to be a back-and-forth first half, the OGs eventually went up the gears to extend their lead. Deft hands from Marek Mycawka and Matt Beveridge allowed centre, Dan Tilley, to glide over the try line.

The first half drew to a close with Kitson crossing the line again to leave the scores 21 - 5 at the break.

The second half started like the first half ended, with the OGs again on the front foot. The scrum, anchored by club stalwarts Ash Fenn and Tich Elston continued to dominate, presenting plenty of opportunities for the home team to show what they're capable of.

They extended their lead through tries from Beveridge and Adam Davis. The latter followed slick combination play from forwards and backs to send the Club Captain over in the corner.

The Outlaws weren't done, however. They stormed back into contention with three quick-fire tries to leave the OGs momentarily rattled.

The OGs regained composure to score the try of the afternoon and settle the contest for good. Capitalising on turnover ball, the OGs moved the ball quickly through the hands before Beveridge spotted a hole and broke clear of the field to go over from 60 metres.

Flanker Christian Stevens closed out the contest with a powerful try from close range to seal the victory. Tilley missed his final kick of the match to leave the score 47-29 in Wellingborough Old Grammarians favour.
