A great sunny day out

Welwyn Under 18s went up to Peterborough on Sunday to play a development game with the Peterborough and Cambridge U18s. With the opposition only fielding 5 girls from each club including 4 debutants, Welwyns good numbers allowed both teams to field 14 a side and get a full game out of the afternoon.

Asked for volunteers to play for the opposition in the first half Paige, Kaitlin, Megan and Francesca all stepped forward and gave it 100 percent but despite their efforts Welwyns rapidly improving side started running in tries on a regular basis with some excellent handling and good support at the ruck allowing the ball to be moved around freely.

The Peterborough/Cambridge back three and especially their fullback - playing her first game - had a huge amount of work to do and despite getting beaten, never once gave up on a chase back or an attempt at a tackle.

Turning around at half time well in front Welwyn changed the girls playing for the opposition with Sophie, Catherine, and Macy joining them and Paige volunteering to remain. The addition of some new backs gave the opposition renewed impetus and the second half proved a much harder work out for Welwyn, who continued to score but did eventually concede a couple of tries.

All in all it was a good work out, played in great spirit. Welwyn look forward to their next match home to Harpenden.

Final score 65 - 17 to Welwyn.
