Welwyn run out strong winners

A sleepy Welwyn side took to the pitch against Dartfordians and after a slow start reacting to Dartfordians short kick-off had to dig in and start defending some determined straight running from the opposition. This helped wake the girls up following which they were able to build a structured attack using forward pod play which created space for the backs to exploit and leading to the teams first try.

Dartfordians came straight back with some more direct running attack play. Welwyns whole team made strong tackles whilst maintaining their width in defence. The pressure soon resulted in turnover ball leading to Welwyn’s second try which was quickly followed by a third after which the team were able to relax and start playing with a little more composure.

Tackling remained strong throughout the game and with Welwyn well ahead the girls were able start trying some more elaborate moves in the backs using switched and scissor moves successfully.

By half time the score was very favourable to Welwyn enabling a number of players to switch around and try new positions. Despite some nerves Megan Turpin, Sophia Botterman and Ruby Chesterman-Smith made a successful debut in the back row, Jess Walker scored on the wing and Talia Edizer at outside centre tackled anyone near her.

Dartfordians remained strong in the ruck and scrum which led to them being rewarded with a try followed by a conversion however it was all a little too late and with further fast footwork from the backs, Welwyn secured their tenth try to end the game.

Despite the score Dartfordians pressurised the girls in the scrum and ruck giving some food for thought ahead of the girls next training session.

Great teamwork and tackling were the order of the day resulting in a great success, 62 – 7 to Welwyn.
