Close call for Sabres.

Two Warminster clubs travelled to Devizes for this week's match. Wessex Sabres were to face WS Smashers.
Sabres were only able to field a team of 6 this time and were expecting a loss, but determined to try their hardest.

The play was pacy during the first quarter, with the centre and defensive thirds working particularly hard. In only her second match for the team GK Claire Frere managed some great interceptions, skillfully backed up by Daisie Hale and Molly Weston (who worked hard trying to cover two positions opponents on court) WS Smashers took advantage of their one player advantage and at the end of the first quarter it was 7-2

Sabres were not disheartened by this score- and it was closer than they expected. They took the decision to leave the team formation as it was and came out playing with tenacity. This time it was the turn of the attacking third to see possession of the ball, with Katie Chalmers, Jo Chalmers and Antonia Painter working well around the circle to create great scoring opportunities. They managed to reduce the goal difference to one- ending the quarter 12-11.

With renewed resolve the match continued, both teams fought hard to keep control of the ball. Goals were matched and again Daisie, Claire and Molly had to work really hard not to let Smashers regain a large goal difference. The last quarter began and, with only a couple of goals standing between them, Sabres were committed to try and pass their opponents and win the match. The pace of play picked up and there were lots of fast balls between the two teams. With minutes to spare Smashers were 6 goals ahead of Sabres. Again the great teamwork in the shooting circle, along with constant and strong support from C and WA enabled Jo and Katie to score some more, and Smashers worked hard to keep their goal difference.

The game ended with WS Smashers the worthy victors, but the hard work and dedication of 'The Sabres 6' meant that they walked away with 1 point for coming within 5- the final score was 26-22.

Congratulations to Jo Chalmers who was voted Player of the match by WS Smashers
