The supporters were out in force as usual today to see the Bears come face to face with a mighty strong Golborne side. From the first to the last ball both teams worked hard in attack and both were equally outstanding in defence.
For the Bears it was the increasingly powerful Harry Nuttall who made a big start up the centre of the field, this was continued by Hayden McInerney and Shaun Arnold , but it was crafty Luke Barnett who dummied the ball around the Pirates to score the first try. Strong pressure from the Bears next made it impossible for Golborne to score as they were tackled into touch, Thomas Boyes was on fire. In the next few sets we witnessed great team work from West Bank as they passed the ball about and made great strides up the field. In defence Thomas Boyes and Hayden were a superb duo and kept Golborne out. However in their next set and despite constant pressure in defence from Lewis Lawrenson and Myla Kelly the Pirates scored their first try of the game. With new legs next, with Danyl O’Brien, Lucas Middleton, Jack Egerton and Alfie Ryan on the field the Bears made good metres but failed to score in their next few sets. In defence though, the Bears were outstanding, not letting anything past them, great work from Alfie, Lucas and Myla. Golborne were piling on the pressure but West Bank never gave it a second thought as they ploughed on which lead to a superb try from the immense Jacob Potter. This was shortly followed by a full set from West Bank with great yards being made by Lucas, Shaun, Harry and Hayden before Jack - who was under crushing pressure – scored a pearler of a try for the Bears. Shortly before the half time whistle the supporters witnessed a cracker of a one on one tackle from small but mighty Luke Barnett but then, despite crunching defence from Lucas, Golborne scored their second try.
Half time score – West Bank 12 – Golborne 8
The second half began with Golborne in possession but with intense pressure from the Bears defence Golborne failed to score with their last player in the set being held up right on the line. Awesome defence from Golborne next prevented any score for the Bears and then the same in return from Parkside who kept West Bank from scoring. In West Bank’s next set, Hayden, and Lucas made great strides before Thomas Stanton took the ball right around the defensive line and scored the Bears fourth try. This was swiftly followed by another exceptional Tom Stanton four pointer. In return, Golborne took the Bears by surprise as they ran in their 4th of the game. We then saw great teamwork with plenty of passing along the line as Harry, Alfie Danyl, Jack and Jacob ran the ball in. The games next try came from Golborne who made the score line five tries a piece. In West Banks next set Jacob, Harry, Shaun and Tom Stanton made good ground before Jack Egerton pushed through the defence to get try number 6. This was counteracted by Golborne who also ran in their 6th try of the game. In the closing minutes of the match we once again saw team work at its best with enthusiastic running from Myla, Harry and Jack and then with Shaun on the last play of the ball ran in the final try of the game.
A great show from both teams today, a credit to their coaches and families.
