Bridgford Snowed Under.
The team left Nottingham with games being postponed all across the county. Heavy snow was falling, snow chains were attached to cars and we headed south down the A46 to Leicestershire. We crossed the border, removed the snow chains and donned sunglasses as we arrived at a sunny Anstey Nomads ground.
The pitch was wet and heavy, but playable. We had a few players missing due to injuries and a few others missing for a variety of other reasons. When a team is winning and pushing for a title, players would miss their own wedding to play. . . .when you are at the lower end of the table, it’s a different story, but understandable. So with a bare 11 players, including new signing, Diaz Cameron, on loan from Long Eaton, we warmed up and prepared for the game. The 2 managers were the named subs! We all hoped and prayed they would not be needed, and luckily they weren’t.
We had 2 wingers playing as defenders and to be fair they adapted well, but with all but one of our usual defenders missing it was always going to be a difficult afternoon. Keeper Clark was kept busy and did his best. After 8 minutes, slightly against the run of play, Anstey took the lead. Bridgford looked good on the attack and struggled in defence, and that was the story of the whole game.
The sun disappeared and the snow we had left in Nottingham followed us down the A46. The game was then played in Arctic like conditions....I have never watched a game of football in such horrible weather. It ruined the game with players slipping all over the place. We went in at half time, one nil down and fully expecting (and hoping) the game would be called off. However during half time the blizzard stopped, and the game was okay to carry on.
In the second half we battled as best we could. Tom Hall picked up his customary yellow card, and Anstey played well in the conditions and scored another 4 goals. The scratch team had tried hard and if we had of had the same team that we had had in the last 2 games we would have given them a better game, but that is football.
We know look forward, weather permitting to finishing the season and start to plan for next season.
