Westbury 1st xv began 2016 with a very close game at Knott field.
Entertaining Melksham the game started well for the visitors with some strong attacking play they moved closer and closer to the Westbury try line. However, the Westbury defence was resolute and Melksham had to settle for a penalty which was converted making the score 0-3. Melksham kept pressing and the pressure told when once again they were awarded another penalty which they duly converted Westbury 0 Melksham 6.
Straight from the restart with ball in hand Westbury began to march forward testing the Melksham defense and from a lineout the Westbury backs were presented with excellent quick ball and fly half Aaron Vaughan sent a glorious dummy and giving debutant centre Ash Hart a huge hole to ghost through in the Melksham defence to score his first try for Westbury. Simon Higgins then added the extras.
Making it Westbury 7 Melksham 6 at half time.
The second half was a stale mate with both teams defending their tryline desperately with neither side able to find a way through some excellent and at times desperate defence.
Finally, with minutes to go Melksham were awarded a kickable penalty. Which was converted effectively sealing the win for Melksham.
Final score Westbury 7 Melksham 9.
This weekend sees the team visit Pewsey Vale for their third game against them, this season.
