Combined Counties Division One

Westfield recorded their 4th successive league victory on the road as they finally overcame a stubborn Cobham side.

Striker Damian Panter made his first start of the season whilst Rob Jones and Daryn Hennessy also made the line-up.

Panter nearly made the perfect start inside the first couple of minutes when Shane Cheeseman beat 2 men and lobbed the ball into his path, however the striker misfired his volley and the ball was cleared to safety. The home side took the lead with their first attack on 5 minutes. A free kick from the left slipped out of the grasp of keeper Tony Davies and the ball ran along the face of goal providing the oncoming Cobham player the easiest of tap in’s from 2 yards. Westfield continued to attack and nearly drew level immediately when Panter’s clever run onto Hollins through ball saw his toe pokes effort diverted away by the feet of Westphal in the goal. Westfield were grateful to Davis in the 23rd minutes when he superbly beat away Merison’s volley to keep stop the home side doubling their lead. Half an hour in and Panter was once again thwarted by the hosts keeper as he once again got down well to deny the Westfield number 9. Despite plenty of chances and possession Westfield went into the break one down.

Before the resumption of play Westfield introduced new signing Jemiele Johnson. The winger immediately showed his quality in beating 2 men and hanging a cross that just evaded Panter. Westfield started to really turn the pressure on and a series of corners ended with Liam Parrington denied with a header by the flying Westphal. On 56 minutes Luke Beale nearly scored the goal of his life as his first time volley from 20 yards smacked off under the bar and the Cobham keeper was up quickly to tip away Parrington’s effort from the rebound. Cobham were pinned in their own half and rarely threatened and it came as no surprise when Westfield finally drew level on 64 minutes. Panter’s quick thrown in put in Johnson and his cross fell to the lively Shane Cheeseman who smashed home from 8 yards out. Westfield continued to press looking to take the lead and Matt Steer saw his free kick flash just wide of the post. Again a series of corners followed which the home side defended well but Westfield went ahead with 9 minutes remaining. Johnson feed Hollins down the left and his cross was knocked down by Parrington and Cheeseman reacted first to smash home from the inside the 6 yard box. The game was wrapped up in injury time when a ball over the top sent Johnson free, the striker was hauled down inside the box by the last man although the referee only showed the yellow card to the offender. Liam Parrington stepped up to smash home the spot kick and wrap up 3 well deserved points.
