WL were seeking a win away at Brid, something I’ve never known us manage. With a huge wind blowing down the pitch there was a clear advantage to whichever side was attacking the clubhouse end.
WL had the wind in the first half, and after collecting the kick-off Sam Neave aimed to use it to our advantage by kicking the ball down field, unfortunately he didn’t judge either his wind or own strength well enough and managed to kick the ball dead, giving Brid a scrum inside the WL 22.
Wests were under the cosh with Brid picking and going around the fringes, and were able to get an early score in the corner, which was then somehow converted from the touchline in to the wind. Pretty sure Brid got a penalty as well just after, who knows.
Wests did get on the scoreboard shortly later when Dec Penny took an inside pass to cross under the posts, converted by Cam Breakwell. The scoring passage also saw a Brid player sent to the bin.
Half Time 10-7
Just after kick off Wests won a penalty, and although it drifted just wide of the posts having been kicked in to the wind from the resulting clearance WL were able to score. George Carpenter broke through a ruck and went 70m (his assessment) to put Wests in front.
Unfortunately this was the end of WL scoring, whilst Brid managed to secure two more scores to take the game to 20-14. Despite some late pressure in front of the posts a knock-on saw the chance go missing, and with it the chance to win away to Brid for the first time in the league (maybe)
Full Time 20-14.
There were some additional points of note, Bettsy cracking his head and all of the kings horseman and all of the kingsmen being unable to put him back together again. Furthermore, we had the birth of the iceman (John Marshall) and finding out Lewis Bromley is actually a well-known north-west based DJ – DJ Ladies.
Back at home this week looking to do the double over a resurgent Keighley side.
