Maddie Edwards had her first game with the Eagles and quickly introduced herself from the centre position by shooting a rocket into the top corner after only 3 minutes of play.
A flat defence by Olympia packed around Maria on the line enabled Sunni to shoot from distance 4 times in a row, being set up beautifully by Kiki from the wing and Maddie from the middle. 6-4 to the Eagles after 10 minutes.
Olympia changed to a more aggressive style by man marking some of the Eagles, but the West London team used the extra space on the wings well. Zoe, playing her second match for the senior team, put her name to the score sheet by getting through on the right wing. Kiki found the net twice on the left. Marge secured a goal before being sent off for a 2 min she didn’t deserve.
However, the change in defence by Olympia as well as playing with 7 in attack troubled the Eagles. Despite good goalkeeping by Anette, the Eagles couldn’t keep the defence as organised as it had been earlier in the game and with one player down ended up two goals short of Olympia at half time (11-13).
The second half of the game was a sad scene. Kiki, a key player for the Eagles, broke her ankle and was sent to the hospital with Anais.
In a shocked state, her teammates played on and with four goals from Anne and some great saves by Olli, fought back from being four goals under to equalising 18-18, with 12 minutes to go.
This was beautiful handball and the signs of Eagles hitting their best form were strong, but it cost them a lot of energy and without any subs left on the bench, the last 10 minutes were tough. Olympia with a full bench could bring on fresh legs.
The game ended with a narrow 22-26 loss for the Eagles.
Goals: Maddie 3, Maria 1, Kiki 2, Anne 6, Sunni 8, Marge 1, Zoe 1, Amy, Ollie and Anette.
Kiki will have surgery on Sunday 23rd September and we wish her a good recovery.
