In defence, Anne and Victoria kept the right side of the court closed and forced the GD back players to try their luck from 9 meters with mixed results against Anette in goal. Sunni and Kasia were both quick to steal the ball from GD’s more adventurous players when they came too close and were rewarded with a goal each.
Paul’s team have been working hard to improve the defence as they have been letting in too many goals in their previous games so this was encouraging for the Eagles.
Unfortunately it was not capitalised on in attack. Despite being capable of getting through the GD defence, the shooting was not accurate enough.. After 10 minutes played in the first half the score was 2-2 – showing the number of mistakes and missed opportunities from both teams and GD’s coach asked for a time off at 14’mins.
Paul also made some changes in attack by putting on Maddie and Lacra. This opened up room on the line for Maria who scored from 6m and Noelly from the wing. Maddie secured a penalty for her side which the Eagles scored on and at the end of the first half the scoreboard showed 11-11.
In the second half the Eagles’ newest team member Lilla introduced herself from the goal with some great saves which enabled Zoe on the left wing to run fast breaks. She skilfully distributed the ball to her teammates who in turn had mixed results in front of the GD goalie. The teams were neck to neck throughout most of the second half.
With 58’mins played and 21-20 to GD on the scoreboard, Lilla makes another great save and now Eagles have possession of the ball and a chance to equalise. The pass is made and lands between one Eagle and one GD player in a highly controversial event where it looks like the ball is kicked into the Eagle’s goal. The referees allow the goal to great astonishment and although Lacra manages to score with 15 seconds left on the clock, GD take away the full three points.
