Eagles Women will face Liverpool in the next round of the EHA National Cup after dispatching upcoming side Poole Phoenix

After a tiring Saturday, where Eagles drew 22-22 against Hawks in Manchester, it was again time to go back on court to fight for a win for the Eagles women, this time to win against Poole and get through to the quarter final in the cup.

The game started slow and Poole was the first team to score before Sunniva scored the first for Eagles. The defence was rather poor the first five minutes of the game and it was clear that the girls was fatigued from Saturdays game. However, Eagles picked up and 10 minutes out of the game the score board showed 10-5 to Eagles after a few fast break goals from Maddie, Victoria and Anne. The girls were back on track; The defence then picked up and the Eagles women was playing their game in attack. Margarita scored two beautiful goals from the wing and Sunniva had an amazing long shot making the Eagles lead 13-5-. The girls continued to be playing well in defence and intercepted the ball numerous times which lead to two fast break goals from Maddie and Anne. Olgunn was playing great in goal, which helped the Eagles playing well both in defence and in attack. The Eagles women were dangerous from every positions, but missed a lot of clear chances. Maria, Judith and Amy played well together in defence which lead to Poole only scoring 8 goals in the first half. Eagles had 22 goals.

The second half started well for Eagles with Maria scoring a nice goal from the line. The defence continued to be solid which lead to a lot of fast breaks, but the girls struggled to score on the 100% chances. The girls were penalised for the latter and Poole’s pivot player was hard to stop in defence. The score board showed 26-12 to Eagles when Poole got a penalty which Anette beautifully saved. A couple of fast break goals from Maria, Kasia and Maddie in addition to a striking attack by the Eagles before coach Paul called for a time out. The girls agreed to continue to play the fast breaks and scored 8 fast break goals in total in the second half. Eagles also played their moves which made a lot of gaps in Poole’s defence, Margarita had a couple of amazingly good passes to Maria on the line and Judith and Amy made two penalties each which Amy safely scored on. Poole did not score for about 20 mins in 2nd half which showed a great defence by Eagles. Eagles won in the end 40-14 and are ready to take on Liverpool the 20th January. Bring it on!

Well done to Maddie who was the top scorer with 11 goals and to Amy and Judith who were fighting amazingly in defence!
