The Eagles secured their place in the final of the National Cup with a narrow win 23-22 over Cambridge.

Cambridge, as the only non-Premier Handball League team left in the competition, had previously beaten London Angels and was keen to win over another PHL team in their quest for a National Cup trophy.

The home team had a good start and took the lead 5-1 after 10 minutes played, but the away team fought hard in defence, earning themselves 3 yellow cards and getting two players sent off for 2 minute suspensions in the first half. However their effort paid off and they went into half time one goal ahead.

Paul had a little pep-talk with his team in the break and for the second half changed it up by playing 5-1 in defence to pressure Cambridge. The pressure worked and enabled a couple of clever interceptions followed by fast breaks, and the home team managed to catch up on the score. The two teams followed each other closely minute by minute, goal by goal, getting closer to the prospects of going into extra time.

However, having been knocked out at this stage before, the experience of Paul’s team came through. A great save by Anette in goal set the team up for another attack which resulted in a penalty that was scored by Noelly. Cambridge only had 15 seconds left of the game to try to equalise, but their last shot on goal went outside the goal posts and the Eagles could celebrate reaching the National Cup Final.

The final will be on the 12th May in Derby where the Eagles will face NEM Hawks.
