Gateshead v's South Shields Westoe Match Report

Westoe Secure Victory

South Shields Westoe travelled to Gateshead for the reverse fixture in the league, putting last weeks defeat in the Intermediate Cup round to bed. Westoe 1st XV are carrying a lot of injuries at the moment, so are a few key players short. Although some missing, Westoe still take a strong squad to Gateshead, with a lot of experience which will certainly settle the new combinations. With 7 games left Westoe still have the opportunity to take 3rd or depending on some other results even 2nd. The final push begins this weekend.
Pressure on the home team was applied from the off, an early penalty to Westoe lead to a line out, which was lost and an off side penalty was awarded to Gateshead, the pass was intercepted and some clever ball play by Paul Evans, Anthony Rumis and Ryan Lamb ensured Westoe remained in control of play. A lot of attacking play followed, with some good lines, and passing. Discipline and training regime were paying off. A loose ball was stolen by Gateshead, who unfortunately dropped the ball, giving Westoe the opportunity for more clever play through the lines, which was unfortunately knocked on speedster Ben Roberts. The ball didn’t appear to have any grip, as it consistently fell through both teams hands, what followed was a bout of scrappy play, with both teams being awarded scrums, and the majority of play not going past the half way line. The first turning point of the play was after a Westoe lineout the ball was caught into the safe hands of Anthony Rumis, and with some intricate play between Ryan Lamb, Sam Gaff & Jake Arnold they find Roberts in the corner to touch down for the first try of the day, Converted by Arnold 0-7
Again on the attack straight from the restart a penaltly was awarded and, Westoe opt for a scrum. From Centre field, Chris Judson kicked down the field for a Gateshead lineout, which Westoe turned over the ballfalling into the hands of Martin Bengston, who made good ground, finding Raymie Elliott to finish off in what he does best crossing the line to the cheers from the travelling supporters, converted , 0-14. After pressure in the 22 Gateshead got a much needed penalty which was kicked in to their own half and subsequently knocked on. Westoe still applying pressure were given a line out on their 22, it was taken long and cleverly caught by Will Seymour who kicked towards the line, unfortunately Scott Oliver & Arnold were not quite quick enough to touch it down.
Gateshead make up good ground with the retrieved ball which Westoe tried to kick clear but landed into Gatesheads hands, an excellent tackle by Will Seymour saw , the reversal of the ball and another scrum for Westoe. Mark Bentham came on replacing Bobby Scorer in the front row, before the scrum. A good run by Gaff resulted in yet another line out, with Westoe again retrieving the ball, a driving maul followed, allowing Bengson to score, unconverted 0-19.
A high tackle after too many penalties resulted in Jason Payne being shown a yellow, Gateshead were once again on the attack, only to be stopped stopped by Gaff, who found Roberts who made great ground and cleared the ball. HT
From the kick off in the second half Westoe started as they meant to go on, a few dubious decisions and again lots of scrums ensued, eventully a Westoe scrum ball was turned over, and the scrum was lost. A ruck gave Roberts the opportunity to run 20 metres, pass intercepted giving Gateshead a scrum on their 5 metre line. Another lost ball resulted into a Gateshead lineout, which was stolen by Anthony Rumis, who offloaded to Chris Judson, who found the formidable Paul Evans to touch down, with the wind against the conversion kick it was missed 0-24.
Sam Seymour replacing Judson, came into the game immediately, from a scrum found Ben Roberts alone, which saw him score from his own clever kick running 15 metres to catch it, unconverted 0-29.
A Succession of knock ons resulted in a Westoe scum outside of Westoes 22, a pick and go and a neck roll saw Connor Pascoe carry well into a ruck. Disappointingly Gateshead gained ownership of ball, only to be thwarted by the Seymour Brothers Sam and Will completing a duet of Sam’s tackle and Will’s retrieval giving Pascoe the ball to carry into Gateshead half. Westoe get a penalty from another ruck and returning to the field Strong Bobby Scorer ploughed through several players. A kick chase follows and Lamb carries the ball a good few metres. Yet another Westoe scrum follows and Jake Arnold ran over half the pitch to score the try of the day which he converted 0-36. A quick game of kick tennis followed , ultimately followed by JY knock on which gave Gateshead the scrum. The Ball was cleared by Gateshead who went on to knock it on. Westoe scrum on 10m line, closely followed by a Gateshead scrum after a Westoe knock on, what followed was another knock on this time by Westoe, another scrum, Westoe ball, the following scrum was pulled down. Gateshead tap and go but no ground made, another penalty for high tackle was given to Gateshead, who kicked to touch. Lineout, Westoe lost Jake Arnold to a Yellow Card for an offside infringement. This gave Gateshead’s no 11 to score a try after Westoe ran out of numbers in defence 5-36
