WESTOE’S superb defensive blockade withstood a pounding to notch another victory in their continuing success story.

This was their eighth win from the nine National 2 North games so far and by some distance the toughest.
Director of rugby Andy Howells said afterwards: “Hull were a very good side but our defence was just tremendous and the team deserves the highest praise for coming away with the points.
“However, these are the sort of games we must win if we want to be in the promotion mix at the end of the season.”
With leaders Loughborough Students inflicting a 90-nil humiliation on whipping boys Manachester and second top Fylde earning a hard fought 25-20 win at Caldy, there is no change at the top of the table where the Shieldsmen occupy third place.
Hull went into this contest eager to preserve their all-win home record and it turned out to be a match of very contrasting halves.
In the first, it was Dunes Adventure Island-sponsored Westoe who had by far the better of things and must have been annoyed with themselves to reach the interval only eight points ahead after conceding a soft try and penalty.
It was as if the Humbersiders had been force fed spinach during the break, for they came out in fiery combative mode and spent most of the next 40 suspenseful minutes battering an equally resolute Westoe barricade.
But back to the beginning.
The visitors went ahead with an early penalty by fly half Mark Bedworth after which sustained pressure was rewarded when full back Charlie Rayner broke through to off-load to left winger Garerth Kerr to score.
Hull had hardly been in the Westoe half until in the 28th minute winger Alex Piercy cleverly grub-kicked a loose ball into the try zone where it was fumbled enabling him to lunge on it to score, fly half Greg Lound converting.
Westoe responded with a delightful Bedworth drop goal from just inside his own half and then a try that typified the flair and enterprise thus far of the backs.
Kerr pouched a clearance under pressure on the half-way line, passed quickly to Rayner who set away spring-heeled centre James Clark whose burst took him deep into enemy territory and his off-load enabled right winger Tommy Banks to shrug off a tackle and touch down - Bedworth converting well from a distance.
Irritatingly, an easy penalty conceded in first half extra time kept Hull well in the game and provided a stronger platform for their resurgence.
And how they came back, pummelling the Westoe line and time and again setting off revitalized backs - and, my, how obdurately did Gareth Nesbit’s men, reduced by a yellow card to 14 for ten minutes, defend.
Hull scored a splendid try early on when a precision cross-field kick by centre Maea David found full back James Kirk with plenty of space on the right flank, Westoe, utterly against the run of play, fighting back soon after when the irrepressible Clark darted over.
Thereafter, until the last few minutes when Westoe were at last able to hog possession, it was the men in the black, red and gold jerseys who held sway but when the final whistle sounded they had only a bonus point to show for it.
*Nesbit, who had already lost flanker Hadyn Richards to a sudden illness, praised centre David Haswell, always a key man, who played most of the game despite also being hit by a mystery bug on the coach journey to Hull . He said: “It shows just how dedicated he is. He really should not have gone on.”
