WESTOE made it three wins from three after a battling victory against Burnage.

And to make it even better for the JML sponsored side, they also bagged a bonus point for four tries.

Nathan Horsfall, Mark Wilson, James Clark and Matthew Proctor were the men who crossed the whitewash with Matthew Mellish adding three conversions and a penalty.

The victory was a pleasing one for Director of Rugby Andy Howells, “We had a fantastic game. We looked rock solid all day”, he said. “There were a few turnovers in the first half which kept them at bay really and defensively we were strong against a very strong wind. “And the victory in his eyes proves they are moving in the right direction after a tough start to the year. “We’ve definitely turned a corner. We've got the spirit back in the camp and the boys are working hard for each other.”
The first half was a tense affair with Burnage using the wind to their advantage to pin Westoe back. Chances were at a premium and it was a turnover which led to the only score of the opening period. Burnage spilled the ball on the halfway line allowing Wilson to burst forward. He did get held up but Horsfall was in support to score unopposed.

After surviving the windy first half Westoe started a lot brighter. Burnage thought they had successfully disrupted a Westoe scrum but they figured without the silky running of Wilson. He burst from the halfway line and a wonderful sidestep took him into the corner.

The third was also a result of strong running with Clark getting this one almost in the same spot.

Burnage did have a pushover try with 10 minutes to go but Westoe responded with a pushover of their own, Proctor getting the final touch and with it the bonus point.

Howells was full of praise for his team but singled out Wilson for special praise. “I've got to say second half Mark Wilson had a fantastic game in the centres. He’s turning in week in week out performance after performance.”

The victory lifts the Shieldsmen up to ninth in National Division Three North but their way to a fourth successive win next week is blocked by second placed Huddersfield.

“I was slightly disappointed that they scored seven to be honest but we’ll take the five point win and look forward to Huddersfield next week.
“We’re looking forward to next week. That’ll be a good test; we beat them last year down there, so we’re hopeful we can do something.”
The only downside for the Director comes from a second team’s point of view. They were without a fixture again this week, which is becoming a worrying trend. “We still have thirty or forty playing at training on a weekly basis so that helps bring a good feeling. “Our big problem is we can’t get second team games at the minute which is a nightmare.”
