Nathan Tilley's superb 132 sees Weybridge ease past Wimbledon

A 70-run win over Wimbledon landed Weybridge a second successive Surrey Championship victory, continuing their recent resurgence.

After a tough opening month, Matt Laidman’s side has now picked up five wins on the bounce in all competitions, with their latest triumph coming against an in-form Wimbledon outfit.

Opting to bat first on a warm day in Surrey, the hosts racked up 265-5 from their 50 overs, with the platform laid by a superb 132 from opener Nathan Tilley.

The vice-captain struck 99 in the first round National Cup game at Havant a fortnight ago, but finally posted three figures, much to the delight of a large supporting crowd on the Green.

“He’s been outstanding recently, and it’s no surprise that he’s finally gone truly big,” said Laidman.

“Everyone knows what he’s capable of but all batsmen will go through lean periods. Nathan is an ambitious lad with high standards and he was beating himself up early season, but his quality has never been in doubt.

“I think it’s also important to add that while he’s key to our batting line-up, he also brings a lot the side – and the club – in other areas. He’s a big presence around the place, and is doing some really good work coaching some of our talented young players.”

Tilley put on 169 for the third wicket alongside Nick Compton (70), combining to score the bulk of their team’s runs. Odge Davey also contributed 29 at the top of the innings, with Wimbledon’s David Scott the pick of the bowlers in taking 4-49 from his ten.

The reply never got going, as the Weybridge quicks got stuck in right from the get-go, reducing Wimbledon to 56-5 and with, ultimately, too much to do. Harshil Patel picked up 1-28, Joe Barrs 2-26 and Jack Winslade 3-38.

To their credit, the side from SW19 did rally courtesy of Billy Sewell (44 from 63) and a swashbuckling 65 from Jonathan Dewes, which came off just 41 balls and included 14 boundaries.

The resistance was ended by Josh van Heerden, who quickly got over his disappointment with the bat by picking up 3-28 to bag the full 20 points for Weybridge and close the gap on the division’s leading clubs.

Next up is a trip to Ashtead this coming Saturday (12pm start) as the opening set of limited overs fixtures come to an end. Ashtead sit third in the table, four places and 18 points above Weybridge but the division is incredibly tight, with plenty still to play for.

The trip to Woodfield Lane precedes a trip to Sunbury on Monday evening in the last-16 of the Surrey Championship’s T20 competition, with that one scheduled for 6pm.
