Weybridge Under 15’s v Esher Griffins
April 18 2021

Spring sunshine provided the perfect backdrop for the season opener for the Under 15’s in the local derby against the Esher Griffins on Weybridge Green.

Training and preparation have of course been very limited and non-existent for some but Weybridge fielded a strong side mixed with experience, youth and enthusiasm.

Esher unusually appeared unprepared and batted first with a clearly inexperienced top order mix whilst awaiting the big guns to arrive from another game.

Weybridge set an early tone of competitiveness with some tight bowling from Washington and Rider giving the Esher batters the viscous combo of left and right arm pace ensuring they were on the ropes early. Breakthrough happened quickly with Rider exceptional in his 3 over spell capturing both openers. Charlotte Lambert bowled with a tidy efficiency trapping the not so bright Lantern.

With Esher struggling at 28-4 captain Faircliff took the spin option bringing on Dahir to be rewarded with a sharp slip catch to put Weybridge in the driving seat and set an early challenge for wicket of the month/season awards.

All the bowlers contributed, with a notable first tier 1 wicket for Jack Dunlop trapping the former Surrey player Malet de Cadenet for a golden duck lbw. Charlie Bishop, Aarush Gupta and Ben Bury supported the efforts ensuring Esher always remained in sight.

However, Esher responded with their late arrivals and fought a brave and aggressive rear-guard with an impressive 61 from Christian Nicolaou to set a chase of 174.

A stuttering start saw both openers dismissed quickly. The reliable Francis (39) and Faircliff (22) shored up the score and laid the foundation for a stylish wristy 59 from Dahir who manipulated the field in perfect control. Ably supported by an aggressive pairing of Washington(23no) and Bury(22no) they drive home the advantage with boundaries all round.

Weybridge proved comfortable winners.
It showed that this squad of players is packed with talent and energy and with some polish added they can achieve success this season.
