Dear Fellow Vandal
Firstly can I wish Vandals everywhere a happy and healthy New Year.
In the opening paragraph of my last club update on 19th December I said “As you all know the COVID situation remains very fluid and this update is based on what we know now but our recent experience would tell us that this is likely to change again and we will need to remain nimble and adapt accordingly”. Unfortunately these words have come back to haunt me and I’m sad to say that the COVID situation has deteriorated alarmingly over the Christmas period and we now find ourselves at the beginning of a 3rd but hopefully last full lockdown.
Throughout this dreadful pandemic it has always been our priority to go the extra mile to create the safest possible environment at Brownacres so that our players could continue to train and play Rugby, cricket and netball at our unique island location. Many hard working and committed club volunteers and coaches have continually gone the extra mile to make this happen and this latest lockdown however necessary is blow to everyone.
However In the words of Clint Eastwood in the film Heartbreak Ridge “We Improvise ,We Adapt, We Overcome” and I have been incredibly proud how quickly our coaching team have reacted to the reality of this latest lockdown and later in this update I will share some of the activities that have been put in place to help the physical and mental wellbeing of players of all ages during this latest lockdown.
Before I do that I would like to update I will also update you on the progress of our Weybridge Vandals COVID recovery fund.
Weybridge Vandals COVID recovery fund Crowdfunding update
I’m pleased to report that with one week of the Crowdfunding campaign to go nearly 200 Vandals have now answered the call in this OUR clubs hour of greatest need and have generously donated £22.5k including Gift Aid!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would like to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who has taken time to donate so far, your support is greatly appreciated. It’s been wonderful to see donations coming in from ALL sections of the club and with the incredibly generous support of our “guardian angel” Heidi Davies who has committed to match £ for £ everything we raise we are well on our way to reaching our target of £50,000.
I would urge those Vandals who have yet to donate to please take time to do so and join the 200 Vandals who have. As a result of your generosity we have the opportunity to come through the most challenging year in our history debt free and able to invest in improving our facilities and to continue to develop our players.
We all know that exercise is key to help combat and ease mental anxiety and we continue to encourage ALL of our Vandals community to get out in the fresh air and exercise as often as possible within the government's permitted guidelines or participate in the various online workouts I have mentioned.
For security reasons and to prevent any unwanted visits from the traveling community the barriers into the club will be locked the majority of the time during lockdown but the club grounds are still available for any members wishing to use them to exercise with in the permitted guidelines.
While this is obviously not the way we hoped to start 2021, we all need to stick together as Vandals and play our part by making sure we adhere to Government guidance over the next few weeks. This will help protect our communities and enable the vaccine to be as effective as possible, so that we can begin to return to a normal way of life, including Rugby, netball and cricket in the coming months. When this happens, as it will I believe we have some very exciting times ahead and the adversity we are all currently living through will make those Bid Vandals days ahead of us even more special.
Thank you for your continued support, stay safe, stay positive and remember we will come through this.
