The Vandals u11s won a narrow victory in their opening Gladys Chitty League game.
Bowling first against opponents Royal Ascot the Vandals started well with Oscar Powell picking up a wicket in the second over. The Vandals remained on their game and were sharp in the field, Callum Gordon effecting a direct hit run out, whilst Alifie O, Ryan Bradley and Alfie Spiers all combined well to prevent another batter making his ground. Seb Binedell bowled a beauty to take another wicket and when Oscar returned for another scalp the Ascot innings looked doomed to disaster.
However, their last wicket pair added 29 in 4 overs to bring respectability to the Ascot score, eventually ending at 262. A special mention going to Ryan Binney, who bowled tightly and deserved more in his couple of overs.
Vandals should have made light work of the total but were often found wanting with the bat. Too many big shots and sloppy run outs accounted for more wickets than they should have. Aidan Binedell's two 4s the rare highlight in an otherwise dismal showing.
In a thrilling last over, with 1 run needed, Vandals again shot themselves in the foot when Oscar was run out third ball. However 3 cheekily run byes off the last ball saw the boys over the line and sparked scenes of jubilant celebration. They move on to East Molesey next week but know they must do better if they want to continue their unbeaten run.
