The boys travelled for a rare away fixture to Vicarage Fields for their Friday night game against Egham CC. Losing the toss, they were inserted in to bat and soon lost wickets. Some tight leg spin bowling from Egham skipper Hari saw 4 wickets fall in the the first 4 overs. They continued to fall at a regular rate with only James Gatt providing any resistance in the top 6. Alfie Spiers added momentum with some sparkling strokes whilst Oscar and Marco finished in the positives to get us to a defendable total of 259. Having lost 10 wickets (40 runs) in that time the Vandals were content they had a total they could bowl to.
And boy did they bowl well. Alfie got a wicket the second ball of the innings and Oscar with his first ball. Marco and Aidan added vital maidens whilst Larry and Seb added more wickets to restrict Eghams dwindling total. Oscar second over saw another first ball wicket and with Ollie M keeping any byes at bay with some fine wicketkeeping the hosts were struggling to get runs on the board.
With their final pair in and requiring 24 runs the Vandals finished strongly. Marco got due reward for his excellent lines with a wicket caught behind by the ever alert Ryan. Callum returned after a disappointing first over to claim the scalp of the oppositions gun batsman and when Oscar provided the coup de grace with a direct hit run out the boys knew victory was theirs. Egham finished 17 runs short on 242.
This was by far the finest bowling display the boys have shown. Every single bowler bowled tight lines giving away very few extras which in the end was the difference between the two sides. We must strive to be more solid and give less wickets away with the bat but if we can continue to bowl and field like we did tonight then we will win many more games. Next up is Walton next Thursday (11th) evening.
