The 1s started the season with a journey to Croydon for the 2017 season opener with 3 debutants in Steve ‘The Neighbour’ Hennesey, Rob ‘Ninja’ Bastin and James ‘Ewing’ Randall.
Inserted to bat, everything looked great to start with as Sam ‘Brezzie’ Buckell swatted the first delivery of the match through fine leg for four. However, as often happens with jet lag after a long journey, everything can seem fine and it then you suddenly hit the wall. The wall in this case being Daryl King who ripped through the Vandals with 5-14 leaving the Vs 45-8. Brezzie and Ali ‘Burr Hill’ Booth had their moments in top scoring with 15 each, but there was sure to a long queue at the naughty boy nets at Brownacres in the week. There were three other highlights for the innings. First was the application of promoted up the order Jonny ‘Colin’ Powell to resist long enough to allow the second highlight; debutant Ewing showing gumption and fight to score 12. Colin also survived long enough to allow the innings to finish in appropriate fashion, combining with Scott ‘Ginger’ Baker to end the innings with a run out. 59 all out. Must do better.
Trinity took no time in setting about their target. Colin took the only wicket of the innings and bowled surprisingly well despite his previous day’s birthday excesses throughout. However, the bowlers had already been so let down by the batsman there was nothing much they could do. Trinity cantered to a 9 wicket victory and then it was finally time for tea. It may have been the hammering just administered had left a bad taste, but that, like the rest of the day was nothing to write home about either.
