Match Report by Helen

A tough match that showed our true fighting spirit!
Was it the hard work we put in at training on Thursday, Michelle's pep talk before the match, or the pictures of cats with eyebrows that spurred us on to victory this week? We may never know, but whatever it was it worked, because we came out fighting to secure a win that will hopefully push us back up towards the top of the table where we belong.
The first quarter showed us that this was not going to be an easy win. The opposition was tough, marked us closely all down the court, and exploited any inaccurate passes within our team. Claire and Sooz set us up for a great start, potting some great goals in against a very tall defence. This gave us a two goal lead at the end of the first quarter but unfortunately her heroic exploits left Sooz with a very swollen finger which meant she was unable to play on for the rest of the match.
Luckily for us, Amy had recovered from her bum injury at training and was able to swap in for Sooz who took over scoring duties. With some great feeds into the circle from Michelle and Laura, Claire continued her success at GS and Amy settled in very well at GA and not only popped some great goals in, but also got a few tips and turnovers to bring the ball down and extend our lead to 13-8 at half time.
The opposition fought back in the third quarter but we continued to put a lot of pressure on them defence, with Leigh marking the WA closely and providing a vital link down the court, and Jules cutting off the overhead option time and time again. Jules and I managed to switch between our players a few times and we both got a few intercepts in the circle - anyone would think we had been listening to Kate in training! We thought we had lost Sooz to a bruised finger, but she showed again how critical she is to our team in every way when she spotted that the other scorer had omitted a couple of goals, so after a lengthy break to fight it out, we finished the quarter having extended our lead again by another few goals.
The opposition continued to fight hard for every ball right to the end and the fourth quarter felt close, but we ended the match with a solid win at 31-18. We were delighted. Roll on the next match!
