Restart of the Shaun Matthews Memorial game vs Chobham

Weybridge Vandals Owls 17 points Chobham Vets 12 points.

This regular memorial match played last Friday evening in honour of the late Shaun Matthews, could not have been better improved and the very close result would have bought a wry smile to Shaun's face. In his long and illustrious rugby career, Shaun played for both clubs, displaying great loyalty and commitment, and as a fearsome front row forward his scrummaging technique was such that his opposite number was invariably under pressure and gave his team a distinct advantage in the set piece. The respect in which Shaun was held was shown by the number of players turning up to play and watch and wanting to show their appreciation of a proud and loyal club man.

In the first of 4 20 minute periods Chobham came out with all guns blazing , and if they had not been obsessed with the kicking game they probably would have opened up a larger lead than just five points. This cost them in the second period as Vandals punished them for another loose kick, with Stuart Howkins leaving defenders in his wake as he raced away to score. There was little to choose between the two sides in the 2nd 20 minutes spell, But enterprising play in the third session lit up the game, and Vandals last just edged it with scrum half Jonny Clarke defying the years, splitting the defence wide open to score a dream of a try which he himself converted. Chobham came storming back in the final quarter, but having gone through the phases, they eventually breached Vandals defence to score and convert bringing the scores level at 12 points all. Looking down from on high Shaun Matthew would have pleased with the draw, but Vandals Owls were determined to finish with a flourish, and they did with a fine try by winger John Dixon, despite some last ditch defence by troubled.

He had been a great entertainment with players and a large band of supporters coming together to remember Shaun. Vandals Past President Gareth Owen once again had donned his Boots together with several other Golden Oldies, including Vandals Owls manager Paul Hollingshead who had organised the team, and Current President Kevin Keaney, who presented the memorial trophy which will be competed for annually.
