Vandals were quietly confident they could topple the League Champions,

but if they were honest with themselves they would not have expected to have inflicted such a humiliating defeat on the Hampshire side. Billed as the battle of the Titans with Winchester in pole position and Vandals in second place, it promised to be a fiercely competitive game, but in the event it was such a one sided match that Winchester looked like a team that were struggling to avoid relegation rather than assuming the number one spot. From the first scrum, Vandals imposed themselves and out played their opponents in every aspect of the game, and never allowed Winchester to find the rhythm that has seen them have such as successful season. It was a truly superb performance by Vandals with the spirit, effort and commitment of the players, throughout the eighty minutes, shining through. All the strenuous work in the training park, where they have been extremely well coached by NICK RIDLEY and JOHN PERRIN throughout the season, has paid dividends, and this rout of Winchester has to be the most satisfying win of the campaign.

Early dominance up front soon saw Vandals entrenched in Winchester’s 22 and from an attacking line out the forwards worked a training ground drill to drive over for a try, burly DAVE MOORE getting the touch down. Fly half JAMES WELLDEN converted, and from the restart skipper TONY COUZENS and hooker DILLON JOHNSON drove forward to keep Winchester on the defensive. Winger BEN SCOTT had a good run and although the visitors forced a line out they made a mess of possession and Vandals flanker DARREN LOCKYEAR pounced on the loose ball to score his side’s second try. Winchester had a chance to reduce the deficit, but the penalty kick was short and even when Vandals lost a player to the bin, they could not penetrate Vandals defence and half time came with the home side 12-0 up.

Winchester were just about still in the game, but not for long as they had to content a Vandals side firing on all cylinders. After some phase play WELLDEN spotted a gap and cut through to score under the posts for his own conversion. Centre GREG CUSHING then put in a great touch kick, and from a tap penalty winger LUKE CARTER darted over for Vandals fourth try to give his side a bonus point. With the pack in awesome form, they chose a scrum when Winchester were further penalised. From the set piece the backs set up good quick ball and prop CRAIG DE COUTEAU, who invariably made great yardage in the loose, took a pass to crash over for Vandals fifth try, and once again WELLDEN slotted the extra point. Revelling in the possession they were getting, Vandals centre partnership of CASSIAN BRAMHALL-LAW and CUSHING were constantly getting over the gain line and both came close to scoring. The game was now firmly won by Vandals, but this sides hunger for points did not abate, and with time running out, CARTER, who had replaced the admirable DAVID LOUBSER at scrum half took advantage of good possession from the pack, to jink his way over for Vandals final score. WELLDEN once again converted to take the total to 40-0, a hugely satisfying win.
