Weymouth 14-0 University of Portsmouth

After a one-week hiatus, it was business as usual for Weymouth as they pummeled visitors Portsmouth University 14-0.
Steven Membury, who led the charge with 4 goals, opened his - and the team’s - account with a thumping strike 10 minutes into the first half. A second and third for the Seasiders followed shortly after, both from midfielder Sam Drewitt, and the game looked to be over early.

At 3-0 up, Weymouth had the confidence to play a more expansive passing style of play, and reaped the rewards for doing so. After some quick transfers across the defensive line, space opened up further afield for Membury to receive the ball, and after a quick one-two with Luke Drewitt, he slotted past the hapless goalkeeper.

Sustained pressure led to a string of penalty corners, which were converted with ease. Patrick May netted with his signature drag flick, and a well worked routine led to Captain Simon Harvey striking home from close range. Harvey then added another, striking the ball into the bottom right corner as it rebounded off the Portsmouth keeper.

Despite adopting more defensive tactics for the second half, Portsmouth were unable to halt the flow of goals. Weymouth’s eighth was a scrappy affair, forward Chris Fry bundling the ball over the line from just a few yards out. The ninth was not dissimilar, this time Membury the scorer and he completed his hat-trick in the process.

Luke Drewitt joined the goal-scoring party, bumping Weymouth’s tally into double figures with his first of the game. After skilfully lifting the ball over a defenders stick on the edge of the circle, he found space to smash the ball into the bottom corner from a tight angle. The eleventh was more fortunate. After a mistaken injection, man of the match Dan Bowles did well to find Membury in open space, who duly swept the ball into the backboard.

May added a twelth and thirteenth, first from open-play and then another penalty corner drag flick. Luke Drewitt rounded off the scoring with just minutes remaining, bagging his second goal of the game after some quick play down the right flank by Harvey who tee’ d up the young forward from the base line.

Weymouth will look to carry their goal scoring form into this week’s home match against top of the league Haslemere.

Goals: Steven Membury x 4, S. Drewitt x 2, Harvey x 2, May x 3, L. Drewitt x 2, Chris Fry
