Weymouth 5 - 2 University of Portsmouth

WEYMOUTH continued their promotion push with a fine victory over fourth-placed Portsmouth.

However it was the away side who started the stronger with their forward line creating good chances and testing keeper David Civil but to no avail.

The Seasiders eventually settled in to the game and began to create more chances through great work in the midfield from Daniel Bowles and Matthew Underhill.

Weymouth, through forward Luke Drewitt, who was found expertly by utility man Michael Westlake, opened the scoring.

Drewitt showed great composure to round the keeper and slot home from close range.

The home side, now in the ascendancy, scored again this time through forward Patrick May.

Captain Steven Membury managed to regain possession high up the pitch and found Andy Stiles who, with a first-time deflected pass, found May and he scored confidently.

The home side showed no sign of letting up the attacking onslaught and when Membury won a penalty corner late in the first half, May stepped up and despatched a drag flick low into the corner leaving the keeper with no chance.

There was to be one more goal in the first half, however, this one came from the students, a penalty corner of their own ended in a block on the line from Westlake which was deemed to be illegal.

This was rewarded with a penalty stroke to which Civil couldn’t keep out.

The second half began in much the same way as the first with Portsmouth dominating possession and creating plenty of golden chances.

This pressure was converted when a midfielder managed to ride a couple of tackles and broke in to the circle and fired a shot low to the keeper’s left.

The goal sparked Weymouth into life and began to control possession well and nullified any attacks from the visitors, especially from defender Giles Broadhead who was excellent throughout.

The game was put to bed when skipper Membury finished a lovely flowing move, the final pass coming from Bowles.

There was just time left for May to complete his hat-trick, again coming from a penalty corner.

May stepped up and fired low and into the corner leaving the keeper with absolutely no chance.

Weymouth travel to Havant this week hoping to keep up their winning ways.
