Sweeping snow off the pitch for a warm-up!"

The 9th league game of the season saw Weymouth host Basingstoke 2nd’s, the only other team to boast an unbeaten record so far this season, which proved a very difficult game against a team placed 2nd in the league behind the seasiders. Andy Gallivan, a double vase winner for Weymouth, made a welcome return for the weekend to strengthen the side. Before the game had started, the players, spectators, family and friends had to sweep the snow off of the pitch in order for the fixture to go ahead. After grit and pure determination from everyone the game started.
Both teams felt the blistering cold from the first whistle as they shared possession. Chances were few and also equally shared with both young skipper Dan Dukes and the opposing keeper making great saves to keep the game at a standstill. One of Weymouth’s best chances came down the right wing with Sam Drewitt taking the ball to the base line and squaring it to Steve Membury only to be denied by a brilliant close range reaction save from the man between the posts. Short corners have been key to Weymouth’s attack so far this season, but they couldn’t be converted into goals. A good clean strike from Matthew Lawes and powerful flicks from Patrick May were once again denied by good saves.
Weymouth didn’t have the best of starts to the second half, as Basingstoke scored the opener of the game to take the lead. The home side’s response came fairly quickly with May setting up Andy Stiles who hit a sweet first time shot into the roof of the Basingstoke goal to pull Weymouth level.
Weymouth’s in form defensive back row of Simon Harvey, Wayne Goff, Matt Underhill and Michael Westlake proved hard to break down, with Westlake having a stand out game. He showed aggression in his tackles, and led from the heart of the defence.
The second and deciding goal of the game was created as Patrick May broke into the ‘D’ and reverse hit the ball to the back post where he picked out the perfectly placed Drewitt to tap the ball into the bottom corner of the goal with only 5 minutes left of the game to play.
Basingstoke gave it their all in the dying seconds of the game where they forced a short corner. Dukes saved the shot well as he didn’t want to end the game with a single point. The ball was scrambled to safety by the defence with a small cheer released from the relieved supporters on the sidelines. The final whistle shortly followed with the players erupting with joy.
The game ended 2-1 in favour of Weymouth, who remain top of the league, 3 points ahead of next week’s opponents, Romsey.
