Weymouth 2-2 US Portsmouth

Weymouth held out for a draw against a strong US Portsmouth side; a close game which could have gone either way.

The Seasiders travelled to Portsmouth and right from the start Weymouth struggled with the extremely bouncy Water based pitch which showed with their slack passing and control of the ball and enabled the home side to pounce on the errors. After the first 10 minutes Weymouth slowly adapted to the pitch and started to have some promising chances with Andy Styles just missing the goal by a couple of inches. The game was close with the home side attacking strongly too, but it was the away side who took the lead with a strong attack on the left flank from Steven Membury who placed a low shot into the keeper, the shot deflected off the keepers pad into Patrick May’s path, who calmly reversed hit the ball into the goal. The half ended at 0-1.

The second half started at a high pace and intensity with the play going back and forth to each other’s half and eventually Portsmouth cracked the Weymouth defence with a well drilled short corner to make it 1-1.

The game carried on with both teams making strong attacks and winning short corners, one of which led to Weymouth’s 2nd of the game, with a well executed drag flick again from May. Weymouth carried on with strong attacks with England International, Ian Metcalfe, just hitting the ball wide of the post but the biggest miss of the game came from a great through ball onto the back post where Luke Drewitt missed slotting the ball away. Young Luke Drewitt was clearly annoyed with himself and showed this later in the game by him earning a green card for back chat.

Weymouth tried to hold onto their lead but US Portsmouth attacked hard and finally scored with another short corner as the game was near to the end. Portsmouth team continued attacking but Weymouth held on to a 2-2 draw.
