Man of the Match Natalie Halford

Weymouth travelled away to Mendip on a beautiful spring day to try and continue their winning streak.
Weymouth started strong putting pressure on the Mendip defence, right from the whistle. Good attacking play down the right led to a penalty corner in the first min.
5 mins in after a Mendip attack, gk Laura Osbourne was forced to leave the pitch due to injury. The brief stop in play unsettled Weymouth and led to a sustained period of attack from Mendip. Alice Craven replaced Osborne in goal and it was only minutes until she was put to work and made a vital save. The hard work and perseverance of the Weymouth defence picking up the pace allowed the midfielders to create an attacking opportunity, a well worked passage of play from Wendy Butcher setting Lynda Drewitt up to calmly slot the ball past the Mendip goalkeeper to make it 1-0 to Weymouth. With heads lifted, Weymouth continued the pressure and upped the anti, a period of intense pressure on the Mendip defence led to Emily Austin winning a penalty corner and a straight strike from Natalie Halford into the bottom right hand corner making it 2-0. Half time allowed both teams to regroup and rehydrate, with Mendip starting strong at the start of the second half. The whole team worked hard from the start and quick passing and link up play gave Weymouth a head start in the second half and link up play between Laura McCurdy and Emily Austin on the right, a shot on goal and a rebound from Chloe van Crugten increasing the score to 3-0.
Weymouth's complacency cost them 2 goals in quick succession for Mendip. This gave Weymouth the fire and determination to see the game out and get the 3 points. Weymouth players switched on and kept position and won a last minute short corner. In an identical short corner routine, man of the match, Nat Halford got her second of the match with a bullet into the corner of the goal to secure the 3 points. Weymouth face Bournemouth on Saturday 14th who are joint top of the league.
