Weymouth were once again on home turf this weekend and it seemed luck was on their side as the rain stopped just before warm up.
Weymouth started strong making sensible passes and finding lots of space to run into. Numerous attacks were made for goal from the home side to no avail until Captain Wendy Butcher made a pass to striker Emily Austin who drove into the D. She came into difficulty, passed the ball to Gina Brown who made an overlapping run to the base line. Brown passed to Lynda Drewitt who pushed the ball into the back of the goal.
Ten minutes later, Austin again drove down the right wing, crossed the ball to Butcher who in turn square passed to Becca Duffield who was positioned perfectly at the top of the D. Duffield received the cross and struck the ball cleanly into the goal for Weymouth’s second. Kingsbridge picked up their game and were soon rewarded with a goal from a penalty corner. With seconds remaining on the clock to the end of the first half, Kingsbridge equalized to make it 2-2.
Minutes after resuming after the break, Kingsbridge punished Weymouth after a lapse of concentration to make it 3-2. Play then transferred from end to end with Kingsbridge making the best of their chances and extending their lead to 5-2. Weymouth didn’t wish to give up and continued to press for more goals with excellent running and link up play by player of the match midfielder Amanda Sullivan. Weymouth were awarded a penalty corner after the opposition moved too close to a Weymouth free hit. Jo Brazier injected to Butcher at the top of the D, slipped it right to Austin who passed to the far back post for Niamh Houghton to slap it into the net to make the score line 5-3.
Kingsbridge soon afterwards had a one on one with the Weymouth goalie, Megan Eadon-Turner, who clinically cleared the ball. Weymouth attempted to claw the score back but were unable to finish. Final score 5-3 win to Kingsbridge & Salcombe.
