Weymouth came out strong, keeping possession and linking play well especially up the right wing between Gina Brown, Susie Stone, Jodie Stone and Emily Austin. One such move saw Austin pass to Lynda Drewitt to hit a ball across goal for Niamh Houghton on the far post to have her goalwards bound shot saved by the Teign goalkeeper. Chances were created at both ends and one saw Weymouth central defender Alice Craven with a great overlapping run but the Teign defence were too strong. Teign’s attempts at goal were thwarted by a hard working defence of Jacqui Ridlar, Sophie Foot, Luce Byrne, Craven and Brown and some stunning athletic saves from Weymouth goalkeeper, Megan Eadon-Turner.
Teign, expecting to have an easy game, became frustrated and started to get niggled amongst themselves with one of their midfielders earning a green card for intentionally not moving away from a Weymouth free hit. Weymouth subsequently hit a superb ball into the D for Lynda Drewitt to control on her reverse stick and prepared to strike, only for the umpire to stop play to continue to reprimand the sin binned Teign player. When play resumed, the retaken free hit came to nothing. At the stroke of half time, Teign’s last attack resulted with a goal as the ball sneaked under the goalkeeper’s foot for an undeserved lead.
Weymouth continued to battle in the second half with sound performances from midfielders Wendy Butcher, Susie Stone and youngster, Jodie Stone, who seems to grow with confidence every game and fought for the ball no matter what. Unfortunately, Teign extended their lead with two further goals, which seemed to be unlucky goals, to make it 3-0. Weymouth still didn’t give up and nearly pulled one back with Drewitt lifting the ball over the falling Teign goalkeeper towards the far post for it just to be out of the reach of the advancing Byrne. The result remained at 3-0 to Teign.
Weymouth will continue to fight to remain in Premier League 2B and as one player cited “the morale and spirit is not that of a bottom of the league side”.
