After a long and winding 2 hour drive up to Chippenham, Weymouth needed to dig deep and find their A game for the start of the match. They didn’t disappoint; the first half possession was controlled predominantly by Weymouth with some sleek passing in the middle and many strong pushes down the wings with Susie Stone and Casey Foot demonstrating their skills. Although the possession was good finding the goal proved more difficult; there were some definitely dodgy decisions by the umpires and this coupled with good defending from Chippenham, meant there was a significant lack of shots making it hard to find the elusive goal. The first half had a couple of conceding scares with Chippenham making good breaks, however a couple of great saves from the Weymouth keeper kept the score level. The first half ended with a much deserved short corner awarded to Weymouth, just before time, but the goal remained elusive.
The second half of the game saw a more even match with the possession being shared by both teams in the middle of the field. Both teams were fighting hard, but neither was really making strong attempts on goal. The changing point came towards the end of the game, fatigue had started to set in and Weymouth’s hard work during training paid off. The first goal came from a great pass from Susie Stone on the right who put TJ in one on one with the keeper. TJ kept her composure and slipped the ball, cool as a cucumber, past the keeper to find Weymouth’s first well deserved goal.
Weymouth superior fitness and confidence that came with the goal meant they kept great possession from this point onwards. The ball was being switched confidently around the pitch and Weymouth was probing well for another goal. The second came not long after when TJ picked up the ball on the right and put a strong ball into Sophie Foot making her way into the D at the top. She swept it past the keeper to claim Weymouth’s second. The Second half ended with Weymouth defending a short and the keeper being forced to make a good save. The final whistle blew with Weymouth victorious continuing their fantastic winning streak.
