Weymouth 1st XI started strongly away against Devizes with some good hunting in pairs, along with some lovely triangles – Pythagoras would have been proud!
When threaten Weymouth kept their shape in defence making it almost impossible for Devizes to get through.
Wendy Butcher showed brilliant distribution through the middle, with some excellent pressure from Emily Austin and Lynda Drewitt up front, which was kept throughout the first half however Weymouth struggled to finish. Towards the end of the first half, the ball was feed to Austin who headed up the field, passing a lovely diagonal to Lynda Drewitt who beat her player and the goalkeeper giving Weymouth a 0-1 lead into the second half.
The first 10 minutes of the second half Weymouth went to pieces. They struggled play throughout the field with the defence nearly being broken and players getting agitated, however with the support from the side line by Bernie John, Weymouth settled down, finding their composure and started to dominate the game.
This domination allowed Weymouth to break down Devizes defence with a great run down the right by Suzie Stone who’s strike within the D was saved by the keeper but wrong footed her in the process allowing Drewitt to stick the ball into the net giving Weymouth a 0-2 lead.
Devizes fought back by pushing into Weymouth’s half but the defence forced the ball off the back line resulting in a sixteen hit out. This was taken by Sophie Foot who did a great perpendicular pass up the pitch, passing all players and was picked up Drewitt on the right of the attacking D where she took on the keeper, hit the ball at an angle and put it in the net to score her hatrick of the game.
Weymouth continued to play brilliant hockey throughout the game, continuing with great passing and support throughout the team. An early release from Butcher allowed a strike on goal, which was rebounded off the keeper to the top of the D, picked up by Emilie Sauven who had a quick strong hit which flew passed the keeper into the goal, bringing Sauven onto the score sheet and giving Weymouth a 0-4 lead.
A good strong game played by Weymouth. We travelled far but we came, we saw, we conquered.
