Man of the Match: Jacqui Riddler

Weymouth hosted Salisbury at home on a windy and gloomy Saturday without captain Emily Austin.
Salisbury started strong and put Weymouth on the back foot immediately putting pressure on the Weymouth defence, but Weymouth held strong keeping Salisbury outside the D and made important tackles before Salisbury strikers had a chance to strike on goal.
Weymouth had some good spells of play down the right hand side with Sophie Foot, Jacqui Riddler and Emily Sauven linking up well to move the ball around the Salisbury side, but all attacks by Weymouth were stopped by the Salisbury defence.
Salisbury gained possession inside their 23 yards and stuck the ball between two Weymouth players and their striker played the ball into the backboard making the score line 1-0 to Salisbury.
Sophie Foot, Jacqui Riddler, Olivia Culbreth and Anneka Rogers were strong in defence, preventing any of the Salisbury attackers getting the ball into the D and this showed by only two short corners in the entire game, of which they were both put out immediately by good defensive team play.
Half time came and good support by Wendy Butcher on the side lines gave Weymouth some tips to move forward and build some attacking play.
Weymouth started the second half well with Casey Foot and Susie Stone linking up well to feed some attacking play. Uncharacteristically inaccurate passes by Weymouth left it very difficult for the Weymouth attackers to gain possession and make any attempt at shots on goal.
Salisbury maintained the pressure throughout and a mistake by a Weymouth midfielder passed the ball into the path of a Salisbury forward who converted it to a goal, making the score 2-0.
Sophie Foot was struck on the knee by a dangerous ball and meant she had to be taken off for some treatment, but Weymouth adjusted their formation and kept the Salisbury side at bay.
Weymouth fought back hard, creating a few attacks upfront and an injured Sophie Foot bravely came back on upfront to help and support the Weymouth side.
Weymouth were awarded a penalty corner in the last few minutes, but unfortunately they couldn’t act upon this leaving the final score 2-0 to Salisbury and a disappointed Weymouth side.
