Weymouth travelled away to Bournemouth to face a side who were rapidly going up the league tables after several players returning.
Weymouth also had players returning this week. Wendy Butcher who has just come back of maternity leave and Lyndsey Melhuish returning after a knee injury. Weymouth are excited to have these two back as they create excellent attacking play and are strong in defence.
The game started fast with Bournemouth and Weymouth both playing with good pace and creativity in the middle. Most of the play to begin with was in the middle of the park, with the Weymouth defence strong in keeping Bournemouth attacks at bay. Bournemouth too were strong in defence and prevented Weymouth attacks from being converted and pushed further up field.
Weymouth soon got the hang of the Bournemouth defence and used captain Emily Austin’s pace down the right to generate width and create space in the middle. This left chances for Lara Blundell and Emily Sauven, but neither could be converted into goals after excellent saves from the Bournemouth keeper.
Weymouth’s keeper made several brilliant consecutive saves too and prevented Bournemouth from scoring. Bournemouth also created some good, strong play down the left hand side and had a shot on goal, which went past the Weymouth keeper, but a returning Lyndsey Mellhuish saved the ball off the line and kept the score 0-0 at half time.
Weymouth started the second half strong and had several good plays in the midfield with Casey Foot and Anneka Rogers spreading the ball wide and creating attacking movements with the support from Chloe Van Crugten and Emily Austin.
The defensive players for Weymouth were outstanding at keeping the Bournemouth forwards at bay with Wendy Butcher and Lyndsey Mellhuish having a fantastic returning game and Sophie Foot being her usual strong self. Also, Jo Brazier, playing her first game in defence, was superb in keeping the strong Bournemouth wingers at back and quickly broke down their attacks.
In this game there were many spells when Weymouth thought they could break away, which they tried, but the Bournemouth team were strong in dispersing them. Weymouth had several short corners in the last 10 minutes, but none of which could be converted into goals. There was a near miss at the left hand post after a shot by Casey Foot. This left the final score 0-0, a fair result after excellent play by both teams and the entire Weymouth squad.
