Man of the Match: Emily Austin

Team list: Emily Austin ©Anneka Rogers, Sophie Foot, Jacqui Riddler, Alice Craven, Casey Foot, , Caitlin Dive, Lara Blundell, Lilly Young, Chloe Carter-Miles, Wendy Butcher, Lyndsey Mellhuish.

Weymouth hosted a travelling Team Bath side, whom Weymouth lost to in the first half of the season 2-1, so Weymouth were enthusiastic to create a win at home.
Weymouth started with a strong line-up, with Alice Craven returning in goal and Jacqui Riddler returning in defence.
Weymouth started strong, pushing the ball out wide creating a few attacking opportunities in the first few minutes of play. Weymouth worked the ball up from defence and Anneka Rogers received the ball in the middle. She attacked forward and played a chip pass into Emily Austin in the D, which stifled the Bath defence and Emily Austin struck the ball, leading to Weymouth’s first goal of the day.
This picked up Weymouth’s play even further and Weymouth had more attacking play and held a very high press when defending. Unfortunately, this left a gap at the back and a ball went through the midfield and passed a high defensive press. A skilful Bath forward took advantage of this, got past two Weymouth defenders and the goalkeeper, to make the score 1-1.
Weymouth realised they couldn’t press so high defensively and defended more cautiously. Weymouth still created many attacking play opportunities down the right hand side, using Emily Austin and Caitlin Dive. This led to the second goal, whereby Emily received the ball but couldn’t turn strong side and went onto her reverse, struck the ball and made the score 2-1.
Emily Austin continued to run rings around the Bath defence and created many opportunities upfront, which led to fouls in the D, followed by many short corners and a penalty flick. Casey Foot stood up to take the penalty but narrowly missed at the left hand post.
Half time talks by coach Andy Stiles, highlighted that Weymouth were struggling to use the middle and left hand side of the pitch and Weymouth needed to expose this side too. Weymouth took this on board and went out in the second half raring to go.
Weymouth implemented their advice with Casey Foot and Anneka Rogers spreading the ball out to the left and attacks began to start increasingly.
Weymouth used both sides of the pitch in the second half, using back passes to the defence to create width and depth. This led to an attack down the right hand side where Emily Austin received the ball from a line pass by Lyndsey Mellhuish, taking the ball to the base line. A pass into the D was received by Lara Blundell, who beat the keeper making the score 3-1.
Weymouth pushed on further and used quick plays and passes to create many more attacks upfront. Weymouth won several short corners, which allowed Weymouth to practise different routines. Many were saved by the keeper, but a straight strike by Wendy Butcher converted the score 5-1.
Another short corner routine and the team’s favourite goal of the match, was injected by Anneka Rogers, received by Wendy Butcher at the top of the D, slipped to Sophie foot, who struck the ball back to Anneka Rogers who played the ball into the back of the goal, making the final score 6-1 and a pleased Weymouth side.
