?Fantastic fight back earns point?
U14’s Winter League
White Cross Cyclone 21
Chevrons Red 42
A stunning second half performance by the Cyclone girls saw them gain their first ever league point from Chevrons Red, trailing 6:22 at half time, they clawed the score back to 21:42 at full time.
The first quarter was a lively affair, Chevrons started quickly and took an early 3 goal lead but Cyclone hit back and Erin scored 3 goals and Ruby 1 as the quarter ended 10:4 in Chevrons favour. Maddie Brooke and Jess worked hard in mid court and Lucy and Jess tried to keep Chevron’s at bay.
Quarter 2 was a tough quarter for the girls, Chevrons got on a roll, and try as they might to disrupt them, Chevrons powered their way into a 22:6 lead at the half time interval. Erin and Ruby scored one apiece with limited chances, Maddie, Daisy and Jess gave their all against some pacy play by their opposition and Lucy and Jolie had their work cut out at the back.
What a turn around quarter 3 was, the girls drew it with their high flying opponents 9:9. Ruby was on fire scoring 7 goals and Erin, who gave Ruby some great ball chipped in with 2 well taken goals. Maddie, Brooke and Jess were all over the court and more than matched their opposition and Lucy and Jolie were fantastic in defence thwarting many Chevron attacks, the quarter ended with Chevrons 31:15 up.
So, quarter 4, the girls needed to get one goal more than Chevrons total to ensure they finished within half of their final total to claim their first ever point from them. It was nip and tuck, Chevrons scoring from their centre pass pretty much each time and the Cyclone girls working incredibly hard to keep their ball. Ruby and Erin were superb scoring 3 goals each, Daisy, Brooke and Maddie hustled and hassled their opponents in defence and distributed the ball well when in possession and Lucy and Jess combined well to prevent Chevron scoring opportunities. The quarter ended 11:6 to Chevrons, which meant the girls had done it and finishedbang on half of the Chevrons final total to give a final score of 42:21 in Chevrons favour.
The improvement the girls have continued to make in the past year is a credit to themselves and their coaches, although a defeat, they were playing against a side who are head and shoulders above their Humberside counterparts, but White Cross Cyclone managed to claim the first point from Chevrons that any team has claimed in the past two league campaigns.
A great effort girls!
