Whitehall nearly blown away in gale force conditions.

St Mary's Old Boys RFC 17 v 20 Whitehall RFC.

In near gale force conditions Whitehall dug deep away from home to salvage a win from a below average performance which was partly due to the conditions and part from conceding nearly 95% of the days penalties!
In a match that lacked any shape or tempo in the howling cross pitch wind which favoured neither team it was Mary's who took an early lead within 3 minutes scoring out wide.
However this seemed to wake the visitors up and 2 minutes later it was 5-5 after a storming run by man of the match No. 8 Karl Hancock steam rolled himself over from 5 metres.
The middle part of the game was played mostly in the middle part of the pitch with the wind dictating affairs. A few tapped penalties saw some line breaks which culminated in a score for Whitehall by second row Rich Haycock and Mary's soon replied after some poor tackling by Whitehall.
Half time 10-10.
The start of the 2nd half followed on from the first with a large number of penalties being awarded to Mary's and little continuity. It was only a frantic last 15 minutes that livened the windswept crowd up when against the run of play Mary's scored a try and converted it leaving the visitors with a hill to climb. First it was the forwards who upped their game and player coach Craig Trump smashed his way close to the line but was adjudged to have been held up.
Captain Dean Weaver led the charge and after a blitzing run, started by a 40 metre break by No 8 Hancock, the ball went wide and Mary's were guilty of killing the ball in front the posts and weaver stepped up to kick a tricky penalty to make the score 17-13. It was Weaver again who took the game to Mary's in the final minutes and after a line break he linked up with his forwards who had created space out wide, prop Damien Price feeding winger Marley Gayle who sprinted the 35 metres to the line. 17-18. Weaver slotted an even trickier conversion to seal the win 17-20 and Whitehall held on for the win in the final 5 minutes.
