A sizeable crowd had gathered at Lichfield Sports club, the home of Whittington RUFC for this top of the table clash with Wednesbury 2nds a team unbeaten in league rugby for two seasons. As predicted the game started at a pace as both packs battled for dominance and after the initial power struggle the ball started to be thrown around out wide in the search of the first try scoring opportunity.
This fell somewhat fortuitously to the travellers as a charged down kick from the boot of Whits flyhalf saw the ensuing foot race won by Wednesburys left winger, confidently converted to make it a seven point score although very much against the run of play.
Bouts of strong defence and organised Whit pressure started to create chances both in open play and from set pieces with discipline at the breakdown becoming a concern for Wednesbury as some statue like defending from a quick tap penalty opened the door for Mike Marshall to drift through unchallenged to the posts to peg back the visitors. Some no nonsense defence from both sides saw the half time score remain at 7 points a piece with Wednesburys openside flanker in the sin bin for a blatant infringement at the base of a driving maul.
The travellers came out of the second half blocks the more positive as a scarce missed tackle allowed the Wednesbury crash ball runner to bounce over and regain the lead almost instantly from the kick off, only a few moments later Whit got back on terms as Tom Sullivan latched on to a pass from Marshall to round his man and step towards the posts scoring after colliding with the advancing fullback.
Now with the score so tight and both teams looking to get the edge going into the last 20 minutes, conceding penalties in the last third meant risking a three point punt at goal which Wednesbury were duly awarded and slotted following an off side at the breakdown.
A slender three point lead in a game this tight may have been enough to seal the points but Whits fitness and dogged determination advanced them deep into the opposition 22 eventually forcing an attacking lineout, call made Jay Woffindin nailed the throw to Jameson giving Tom Martin ample opportunity to pivot and offload to the engine Stephen Brown who danced over the line as he peeled down the 5 metre channel giving Whit the win in a game played in great spirits.
Next Saturday we welcome Aldridge 2nds to Eastern Avenue in a bid to cement ourselves firmly at the top of the league.
Get involved, training 7pm Tuesdays and Thursdays at the club would be great to see some new faces as we strive for a second team.
