Wick 2 - 1 Henbury

With the heavens opening for most of the night before and early Saturday morning, expectation was that the game would not go ahead, but after a 10am pitch inspection, the decision was to play as the pitch was in amazing shape. Unfortunately, four games in the MGCL did fall foul to the rain, but four others including Wick's went ahead. Team news ahead of the game was Danny Wingfield, Paul Coles and Mike Hardiman came into the matchday starting eleven with Rob Woodford, Grant Hewitt and Luke Lecrass moving to the bench. However, during the pre-match warm-up Joe Thomas picked up an injury so was replaced by James Pocock. Wick started the game in a 3-5-2 formation, with Kyle Curtis and Jordan Yeo in wingback positions, skipper Rob Moore, James Pocock and Sam Thomas completing the back three. Wick were keen to get back to winning ways after last week's last minute defeat to AEK Boco.

Conditions improved before kick-off (2pm), but the wind had picked up, blowing from left to right. Wick started the game brightly, and after two minutes, a fine cross from Wick's Jordan Yeo grazed the Henbury far upright after receiving the ball from Wick's holding midfielder Nathan Gore. Wick then had two chances in succession, first was a Paul Coles shot gathered comfortable by Henbury's keeper Lewis Jefferies after 8 minutes and then two minutes later another Yeo cross from the right was met by Jordan Scott, who's header cleared the Henbury crossbar. Wick were well on top and created another chance after twelve minutes, and should have been 1-0 up but for a great save from Henbury's keeper Jefferies after great work from Mike Hardiman going past two Henbury defenders and releasing a stinging shot. But surprisingly with all that early pressure from Wick they fell behind in the 17th minute from a free kick that they failed to clear and Shaquille Hunter hit the ball through a crowd of players into the Wick net past Wick's keeper Ash Wintle. The lead lasted just a minute when Mike Hardiman’s shot was turned into his own net by Sam Fitzpatrick to level the score. With conditions improving and the sun starting to shine, on twenty two minutes, Danny Wingfield collected the ball from Rob Moore and drove forward into the Henbury half, he beat one player and crossed from the right only for Paul Coles rasping volley to be tipped round the bar by Jefferies. Wick should have taken the lead from the resulting Mike Hardiman corner, but Wick's centre forward Scott's header went well over the crossbar. Henbury were struggling to deal with the lively Jordan Yeo on the right, bending in cross after cross keeping the Henbury defence under pressure. One the half hour mark, Mike Hardiman drew a diving save from Jefferies to keep the scores level. Wick continued to press, but were unable to brake down the resolute Henbury defence. On the stroke of half time, Wick forced a corner on the left, Yeo stepped up and crossed the ball inch perfect, but Jordan Scott's header was blocked on the line by a Henbury boot. The half finished 1-1.

The second half kicked off and belonged to Wick. However, it was Henbury that came out of the blocks and created two half chances, but the Wick backline marshalled by captain Rob Moore stood firm back up by the vocal Wintle in goal. Wick again started to build pressure in the Henbury half, taking the lion's share of possession in the midfield with Mike Hardiman pulling the strings. Wick made a double substitution after 65 minutes, Shaun Morris replacing Nathan Gore and Luke Lecrass replacing Jordan Yeo. In the next ten minutes, Wick carved out two further chances, one fierce shot from Kyle Curtis and then another Paul Coles shot well saved by Henbury's Jefferies. Then in the 80th minute the Wick eventually broke through the Henbury defence when Jefferies who had been the Henbury hero spilled a Mike Hardiman cross with Jordan Scott there to head the ball into a empty net. Three minutes later, Jefferies pulled off a spectacular double save, denying first a James Pocock header then a Shaun Morris rebound. Wick made their final substitution with Rob Woodford replacing Paul Coles. Wick continued to press for a third goal, but it never came. Game ended with a Wick 2-1 victory and back to winning ways at the nest.
